Safe Steps Carers

The Safe Steps programme is a partnership between two independent Agencies, both established in their field. It brings together two sets of expertise and shares knowledge and training, providing a flexible approach to looking after children and young people.

Safe Steps foster carers will look after young people who have under gone a period of time in a residential unit. These young people have high levels of challenging behaviour and require the care of experienced people to help them integrate back into a stable family environment. Some children will need long term residential care, others foster care and for some a flexible mix of both is required, which is what Safe Steps is all about.

It is the continuity of care from one setting to another that makes Safe Steps really exciting and unique. Residential staff and foster carers will work closely together and train together to ensure consistency of approach.

To become a Safe Steps foster carer you will probably have had previous experience working as a foster carer or in a care background, we do however provide a fully comprehensive training package. To find out more about pursuing a career as a Safe Steps carer please contact us on 0871 226 3760

Profile of a typical Safe Steps Foster Carer

A&B were approved as foster carers for Pathway Care in 2002.

Since their approval, they have offered successful placements to a number of young people with a variety of complex needs. A&B have offered stability, security, routine and firm boundaries as well as consistency, advice and mentoring to the young people in their care. They are experienced in dealing with behaviours such as verbal and physical aggression, damage to property, threatening behaviour, youth offending, absconding, drug and alcohol misuse, mental health issues and exclusion from school. A&B were approved as Safe Steps carers in 2007, and are currently working with their second Safe Steps placement.

A&B are tolerant, resilient carers who thrive on working in partnership with other professionals in making placements a success. They have excellent communication skills and are committed to continuous learning and development.

In his previous employment A was well accustomed to dealing with difficult and potentially hazardous situations. He has a firm but fair attitude to caring and has an excellent sense of humour. B has the ability to put people at ease immediately. She is warm and friendly with an ability to diffuse difficult situations. A&B are able to communicate effectively with young people who are often difficult to engage, and have realistic expectations.

A&B have completed all the mandatory training expected by Pathway Care and in addition have completed further training specific to their role
